Program Philosophy
Sobriety is what alcoholics achieve by not drinking. Addicts achieve clean time by not using (improperly or illegally) any mind-altering substances. Recovery, on the other hand, is much more. It is developing and practicing a whole new way of thinking and living, a new design for living.
We have come to understand that what, how, where, and why we do things affects our life and the life of others. We have learned that there are consequences to everything we do, and that they are only as negative as we perceive them to be. Life has become a series of lessons (with the occasional pop-quiz thrown in) and that our final grade will be determined by the consistency of our actions and constant review of them, (10th Step).
Equally important, is that we have come to learn that life is simply a series of choices. The past choices we have made, the present choices we make and the choices we will make. We have learned that each choice good or bad serves a purpose toward learning a new way of life. We have decided to become individuals who make choices, rather than victims of choices we make.
The following is a list of choices to enhance our living, which we make everyday.
- Learn to recognize the humor in everyday life and laugh whenever possible.
- Invite input from others (you will never be disappointed).
- Look for inspiration and change in all things.
- Learn to be patient and gentle with yourself and others.
- Understand the danger of resentments and anger.
- Celebrate life though fellowship with others.
- Know that we are limited by our own thoughts and beliefs.
- Open our mind to the beauty and symmetry of God's creation.
- Look for ways to make a positive difference.
- Share feelings with others, but do not burden them with emotional neediness.
- Practice balance and moderation in all things.
